10:00-11:30am—Medication Addiction Awareness

-Don Drake - Community Education, Southern New England's Certified Elder Law Attorney, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Massachusetts Certified Elder Law Attorney

The baby boomer generation emerged from an era characterized by a vibrant mix of sex, drugs, and rock music, marked by the prevalent use of marijuana, LSD, and cocaine. Fast forward several decades, and drug abuse among baby boomers has now surged to alarming levels.

Heroin use has doubled, cocaine use has quadrupled, and misuse of prescription drugs has escalated significantly for individuals between the ages of 53 and 71. With the legalization of cannabis, this escalating issue demands our attention, pushing us to develop effective treatment strategies.

Further, another disturbing trend has surfaced within this demographic: an increasing number of baby boomers are entering assisted living communities, bringing complex drug abuse issues with them. This migration is bringing with it a host of complex drug abuse issues, including the misuse of cocaine, heroin, and over-the-counter medications, accompanied by a set of attitudes not previously observed in this age group.

This workshop aims to delve into the complexities of senior drug addiction, spanning various socio-economic groups. It will explore the intersecting challenges of addiction, such as homelessness, criminal involvement, sexually transmitted diseases, and financial exploitation.

Key Objectives:

  1. Demographics of the aging population, especially regarding the “boomers”
  2. Examine risk factors and special dynamics of the “boomer” population
  3. The prevalence of substance abuse and prescription/OTC medication abuse in the geriatric population
  4. Co-occurring issues with addiction
  5. Look at the reasons the diagnosis of substance abuse and treatment is a low priority among seniors
